During my last trip to Canada, I visited Blackwater Coffee Co., a local coffee shop in downtown Sarnia. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner Dave Duguay. I was so inspired by his knowledge, passion and love for coffee that I sensed through our conversation. I was so excited when he agreed to let me interview him for my Entrepreneurship Series. I hope his words of wisdom help inspire and encourage anyone who already has or is thinking of starting a retail store front. Enjoy!
What was the inspiration behind Black Water Coffee?
I love helping people and making people happy. I wanted to be a cop. It seemed to be the perfect fit for satisfying my passion in life, but a job was offered to me in the late 80’s at a family coffee roaster in Toronto( where I grew up). It was the aroma of fresh roasted coffee which lured me into a new direction for my passion.
What is your advice to emerging entrepreneurs about overcoming challenges in business?
As a entrepreneur we have big dreams. I felt it would be a piece of cake, well I learned it isn’t so. Challenges arise and some may be overwhelming and if you’re anything like me( control freak ), don’t be afraid to ask for help.
What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?
Easy. Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
What is a financial tip you would give to emerging entrepreneurs that has helped you?
Need to budget. Be creative with your money. I’m always asking myself, if I spend X how many X’s will we get back and how soon.
When starting a company, what is one thing you would tell those hoping to start one make sure they do?
Absolutely research. What’s going to make you standout above everyone else in 1 year, 5 years, 20 years?
What is the best business advice you’ve received?
” If you want to make a million, don’t ask the bank teller” No hard feelings “bank tellers” 🙂
What is your favorite business quote?
” I surround myself with people smarter than me”
I hope you guys enjoyed this interview as much as I did.
