In 2008, twin sisters Lizzie and Kathryn Fortunato founded the jewelry and accessory line LIZZIE FORTUNATO. Lizzie shares her experience and lessons as an entrepreneur in the fashion industry.
I bumped into Lizzie last summer in New York city and when I saw her I was star struck. I contemplated back and forth in my mind for nearly 10 minutes deciding whether or not to introduce myself to her. After several deep breathes I finally! I’ve admired her and her sister’s jewelry line since I was a freshman in college and their growth truly inspires me. After getting a chance to talk about jewelry (of course) I asked her if she would be interested in an interview for my blog and I was so happy when she said yes! I hope you guys enjoy the interview. Feel free to let me know your thoughts below.
What is the inspiration behind Lizzie Fortunato?
Travel and the artisanal handicrafts of different cultures.
What is the most exciting and challenging part about being an entrepreneur?
The most exciting part is being your own boss and getting to create products according to your own rules. The most challenging part is managing all the moving parts of a small business.
What is the best business advice you’ve received?
To keep a list of the “big picture” goals next to your desk so you don’t get lost in the small stuff.
What is a book that changed your life and why?
I can’t think of a single book that changed my life among the rest; But I am a big reader. I just finished Boys in the Boat, which I loved. The tenacity of those athletes was inspiring.
What is one thing you should never be afraid of in business?
Following your vision and departing from trends or what the market “tells” you to do.
Your advice to emerging entrepreneurs?
Create a business plan. Make sure you have a vision that you feel is really not represented in the market. Make sure what you’re doing needs to be heard and seen, and stands out, because it’s a saturated world out there. And then, make sure you’re ready to work around the clock.
Why do you love what you do?
Because I get to bring to life pieces that I feel incredibly passionate about and that make customers happy!
