HOW TO DRESS FOR YOUR HOMECOMING TAILGATE

We all know that Homecoming is filled with events, parties, games, and most importantly the homecoming tailgate! I personally didn’t make it to my college’s homecoming festivities this year (HU! You Know!), but I do plan to go next year!

In case you were wondering what you should wear for this day filled with food, music, fun, and football, I’ll be sharing a few tips and tricks to make sure you and your guests enjoy your experience and look stylish at the same time!

Homecoming is literally a walking fashion show, especially at Howard and other city schools. Comfort is key on the day of the tailgate because it is going to be a very long day. It’s important to do some research and utilize Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration to help you decide on the vibe you want to give. At least a week prior, take a look at the forecast, and then narrow down the look you want to go for.

I would suggest you choose a look that can layer easily, just in case you need layers to keep you warm and all day. Layering is always a good idea, as the fall days normally start out warm, but then start to cool down as the sun starts to set. Remember, though, a vibe is NOT a costume.

Comfort over EVERYTHING. It’s so important to be comfortable that day. You will most likely be wearing this look for over 8 hours and the last thing you want is to have to do is leave or sit down the entire tailgate because your feet are hurting.

You don’t need to buy new clothes, accessories or shoes. Take time to dig through what you already have and find a creative way to mix and match your looks!

So now you have your complete outfit and you’re ready to celebrate. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your tailgate:

1. Make sure you bring your phone to the party totally charged. Finding a power outlet will be tough. Also bring a portable charger or power pack to keep you connected longer, just in case you need to call an Uber or call your friends to meet up later.

2. Monitor your alcohol intake and make sure you pace yourself, especially if you arrive early. You don’t want to miss the performances, the main event and after-parties. Very important, to stay hydrated by keeping a bottle of water close by and drinking water in between your beverages.

3. Make sure you wear SPF. Sunburns can easily sneak up on you, so keep slathering on the sunscreen and SPF lip balm. Even in the fall, a full day of being in the sun can leave you with sunburn burn and skin damage.

4. Be aware of restroom locations and plan for a line to greet you upon arrival. Having some hand sanitizer in your bag is also a good idea, especially with the popularity of portable toilets.

5. Liquids, ketchup, mustard, or any drink can easily stain and ruin any outfit. I would recommend you keep a travel wipe or stain stick or handy to minimize the appearance of any spills and enjoy worry-free.

My motto is to: Stay ready so, you don’t have to get ready! Preparation is key and there are so many details that you can easily be forgotten as you’re rushing in excitement to head out. I hope these tips help you remember everything and be ready for anything homecoming throws your way.
