I get questions all the time about how I’ve grown my natural hair out and here’s the post I promised! The truth is that there are steps you can take to help speed up and maintain consistent growth of your natural curls. I’m sharing the steps I currently take and that you can use to grow out your natural curls effectively and safely.
ALWAYS DETANGLE
I think its important to ALWAYS detangle your hair before wash your hair. No ifs, ands or buts about this! Before I wash my hair, I use a spray bottle filled with water to lightly mist my hair, then I work oil into my ends and then proceed to split my hair into four sections. Next, I take conditioner and work it into each section and then I take a wide tooth comb (starting at the ends) and gently begin to detangle my hair. Once each section is detangled, with a wide tooth comb, i’ll use a denman brush and work it through for an extra step of detangling. I know it sounds like ALOT of work, but trust me when I say this process makes washing 100 times more efficient and less painful. Now I know I listed quite a few steps, but at minimum please pre-poo with conditioner and detangle with a wide tooth comb before washing, bare minimum.
REGULAR TRIMS
Yes, scissors are your friend! I straighten my hair every 4-5 months and get my ends trimmed in the process. I personally alternate between going to a salon and trimming my own hair, but do what’s comfortable for you. Scheduling regular trims with a professional hairstylist will keep your hair healthy and in turn, promote new growth. Find a frequency that works with your hair styling schedule and try to stick to it. With natural hair, split ends aren’t noticeable, but they’re likely there, and could be part of the reason why your hair is always tangled. It’s essential to get rid of them. Also, regular trims will prevent you from having to cut off damaged inches off of your hair in the future.
PROTECTIVE STYLES
I love changing my hair styles and giving my natural curls a break by wearing wigs, braids and other protective styles to help grow and protect my natural hair. I personally tend to wear my afro out in the spring and summer when there’s more moisture in the air. During the colder months, I wear protective styles for longer periods of time and that’s when I notice the most growth. Just letting your hair rest and not touching or manipulating it does allow it to just grow. I shared a few tips on how you can care for your hair while wearing protective styles here.
REMEMBER YOUR SCALP
Don’t ever ignore the health of your scalp when it comes to growing out your hair. Using products such as a scalp scrub, hair mask or hot oil treatment can help stimulate circulation, remove product build-up and strengthen the bonds of your hair. When wearing protective styles for an extended period of time or if you have an active lifestyle and can’t wash your hair as frequently, cleanse your scalp regularly. I normally like to use a wash cloth and witch hazel to gently rub and cleanse my scalp in circular motions. Depending on how my scalp feels, I will also use a oil treatment or tea tree oil directly on my scalp. A damaged scalp can affect the growth cycle of your hair, so it’s important to keep it clean and nourish it with moisturizing ingredients.
MORE MOISTURE
It’s easy to neglect your hair while it’s out or wearing protective styles.When I’m wearing my curls out, I typically use a spray bottle filled with water and lightly mist my hair, but if its a protective style I make sure I mist all the way to the ends of my braids. I’ll alternate between using plain water and any leave-in conditioning spray, so there is less product build-up. You don’t want your hair to get too wet, just a light layer of moisture and then you can use a light oil to seal it in. I mostly do this at night before I tie my scarf at night, but depending on the style you can do this during the day as well.
At the end of the day, I think it’s important to remember to find your products and regimen that works for your lifestyle and then just stick with it. Keep it simple!
