5 UNDERRATED BEST PRACTICES FOR YOUR NATURAL HAIR

I’m always asked how I grew out my natural hair. Besides genetics, I wanted to share a few tips that I think are overlooked to help your curls flourish and thrive regardless of the season.

LESS IS MORE
Wearing protective styles or styles that require to manipulate your hair less is best your hair and scalp. I’ve found that do less to my hair actually helps it grow, During my extended periods of wear wigs or braids, that when I notice the most growth with my hair.

TRIMS
We have anywhere from 1 type of split ends up to 15 different types of split ends. Some of them you can see with the natural eye and others you can only see microscopically. For healthy hair, it is imperative that you trim your ends seasonally. I personally trim my ends twice a year and actually alternate between visiting a salon and doing it myself.

PROTECTIVE STYLES
I’m a major fan of protective styles, but are protective styles always protective? In some cases, we only protect our hair and not our scalps. With wearing protective styles you want to make sure that you are watching the tension, cleansing, and hydration of the scalp. Once you have damaged the follicles of the scalp it is very hard, next to impossible, to regenerate the follicles on the scalp.

CO-WASHING
Conditioners should not be used to co-wash hair. They are created to condition the hair. When you use a conditioner to co-wash the hair it can attract dirt and build up; not only on the hair but also on the scalp. This will cause the scalp follicles to have build up, and produce hair growth at a slower rate. Alot of brands have created actual co-wash products to help you in between shampoos, try using those.

TREATMENTS
I suggest treating your hair to a new treatment as the season’s change. I love doing hot oil treatments, protein treatments and even hydrating mask treatments on my hair. It’s really nice that brands have started to create a wide range of selection of treatments based on what your hair needs!
