MY SUMMER SKINCARE CHECKLIST : OILY SKIN

As you all know, when the seasons change so does your skincare routine. I believe that you should change the skincare products you use once the weather changes to warmer and more humid temperatures. During the summer, your skin needs extra protection from the sun and hydration more than any other time of the year. To avoid and reduce any skin issues, there are a few products that need to be part of your regime. The following five are the key factors that I try to keep in mind once summer approaches.

MASKS
I love using masks! Not only is it a fun experience, but nowadays there are so many options based on your skin type. In the summer I like to use masks that really deep clean and help remove dirt and absorb excess oils. Depending on the mask, I like to use them 2 – 3 nights a week, just to give my skin a break from treatment.

ACNE-FIGHTING
Summer means heat and along with the heat, comes more sweating and breakouts. Unfortunately, during these warmer months, it’s a lot easier to have sudden breakouts because of what our skin is exposed to and bacteria. Heat exposure causes sweat and excess oil production, and as a result, your pores can get clogged with excess buildup. Look out for products that contain salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to help fight this new acne directly. I deal with sudden breakouts on my cheeks and upper back at times.

SPF
Another most important thing to incorporate into your routine is SPF-infused products. I’ll admit that it’s just in the last two years that I truly started being faithful with SPF. I know that it’s recommended you wear sunscreen every day, even when it’s not summertime because UV rays are always present. I can testify that since I’ve been consistent, I’ve noticed my hyperpigmentation clear up faster and my skin has been more predictable. Don’t forget to wear your SPF, especially during the summer heat.

TONER
Another item I never, ever miss is using a toner after cleansing my face. Toners have many benefits including soothing your skin, restore your skin’s pH, removing anything your cleanser missed and the list goes on. Using a toner also makes sure that your sunscreen or primer that’s been on your face all day is off for sure. Especially since I have oily skin, a toner is a must in the summer months to cleanse my skin and shrink the appearance of my pores.

HYDRATION
Believe it or not, even with oily skin hydrating my skin is super important. I like to use a watery, oil-free moisturizer that light leaves my skin feeling refreshed, hydrated and clean. Another tip I learned is to apply my moisturizer immediately. Applying your moisturizer is when your skin is still damp, actually helps to lock in hydration.

What’s on your summer skincare checklist?
